What is the RodRadar LDR Excavate™?

The LDR Excavate™ is a digging bucket with RodRadar's Live Dig Radar® built in. It uses Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) — sending RF waves into the ground and analysing the reflections to identify utilities before the bucket reaches them. The operator gets an automatic alert in real time, showing position and depth.

It detects gas, power, communications, fibre-optics, water, sewage, oil, and chemical pipelines across any soil type. Penetration depth ranges from 5" to 40" (12.5cm to 100cm) depending on soil conditions and utility type.

Pre-dig surveys help, but they don't protect you during the dig itself. The LDR does — it's running on every stroke.

Real-Time Alerts & Insights

The LDR bucket comes with three tools covering the operator in the cab, the site manager, and the wider team.

LDR Visualize™
A screen mounted in the cab. It shows the operator live alerts as the bucket scans, with position and depth of any detected utility displayed clearly.
LDR Insights™
A web portal that logs all utility detections and near-miss events. Useful for site reporting, client sign-off, and showing evidence of what was scanned and when.
LDR Capture™
An iOS and Android app for the team on the ground. Access scan data in real time, log soil and utility information, and attach photos — all synced back through LDR Insights™ for a full record of every excavation.

Frequently asked questions

What types of utilities does the RodRadar LDR detect?
All of them — pipes, cables, conduits, the lot. It gives the operator position and depth in real time as they dig.
How difficult is installation?
It goes onto any excavator platform without much fuss. Setup is straightforward and operators pick it up quickly.
What excavator sizes is the LDR Excavate compatible with?
Five types covering 1–3.5, 3.5–8.5, 8.5–16, 20–30, and 30–40 metric Ton machines. Note there is no bucket currently available for the 16–20 Ton range. Widths run from 45cm to 92cm.
How does the operator receive alerts?
Through LDR Visualize™ — a screen mounted in the cab that shows live alerts as the bucket detects utilities below.
Can we track and report on utility detection activity?
Yes, through LDR Insights™ — a cloud portal that centralises all scan data, detections, users, and devices. The LDR Capture™ mobile app (iOS and Android) lets the site team add soil and utility information and attach photos in real time, all of which feeds into Insights for a full excavation record.
What is the ROI on the RodRadar LDR system?
Garney reported a 60%+ reduction in utility strikes in the first two months and said the system had already paid for itself. Most customers see returns quickly given what a single strike can cost.
